How you can help us

Volunteering

Without our volunteer facilitators, Somewhere Else wouldn't be able to function - we always welcome anyone interested in volunteering! It's rewarding, fun and a great way to make new friends.

Our breadmaking sessions are on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10.30 to 2.00; our volunteers usually start between 9.30 and 10.00 to help set up.  We're very flexible - some volunteers work every week, some every other week, some once a month.

Harry completed his volunteer facilitator training in Spring 2015, and he will often arrive early on a Tuesday morning to put together a batch of rolls for serving later during lunch.  Here he prepares a batch of granary rolls for their second rise before baking... Harry's rolls always turn out light, fluffy and delicious with butter and jam!

Training

We provide full training, including

  • Breadmaking skills
  • Food hygiene
  • Health and safety
  • Communicating with others

To gain confidence and experience, you will need to facilitate at least 10 breadmaking sessions.  You will then be awarded a certificate of completion.

Creating Safer Space

The Methodist Church requires all volunteers to be trained in safeguarding children and vulnerable adults.  We will provide a short Creating Safer Space module.

Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service

The minister can help you to obtain your DBS safeguarding clearance.  This is an essential requirement for our volunteers.

Fundraising and Support

Somewhere Else is supported by grant assistance through the generosity of the Liverpool District Methodist Church.  Also, many generous church congregations and people from the UK and around the world give donations which help fund the work of The Bread Church.

As The Bread Church relies on donations to continue its work, we are always grateful for any contributions we receive, but everyone is welcome no matter what their circumstances.

When we are asked about costs, we have worked out that each 1lb loaf absorbs about £2.00 of ingredients (we use good quality organic flour), and £2.00 covers the cost of lunch.

Gift Aid

Donations can be boosted by 25p of Gift Aid for every £1 that is donated to Somewhere Else.  In order for us to reclaim gift aid assistance, you must be a United Kingdom taxpayer.

The Gift Aid declaration form can be downloaded below.  Please send the signed form, along with your donation to:
